Places to See, Things to Do

Rock Ridge is located in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest located on 140 acres. The backdrop at our home is a line of bluffs that can be seen from miles away. You can spend hours in your own backyard or get out and explore Giant City and Ferne Clyffe State Parks, LaRue Pine Hills, Trail of Tears State Forest and Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge. They are just the tip of the iceburg for those who love the outdoors. Tunnel Hill Bike Trail is a destination spot for those who love to ride.

There is World Class bird and deer hunting in the southern Illinois region, along with some of the best fishing the Midwest has to offer. We do not allow hunting on the property but we do offer a stocked pond. We are also conveniently located to the Shawnee Wine Trail which boats a dozen award winning wineries just minutes away. There are antique stores and other hometown shops, lots of local eateries and annual events such as Vulture Fest in Makanda, the Superman competition in Metropolis and the Apple Festival in Murphysboro.

Rock Ridge is just a short drive from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and would be a great place for those family weekends or graduation!

Most would agree that the star of the show in Southern Illinois is our beloved Bald Knob Cross of Peace in Alto Pass. It is the tallest Cross in the Western Hemisphere standing at an impressive 111 feet tall at an elevation of 1000 feet with sweeping views of The Shawnee National Forest and everything beyond! It is awe inspiring and by far worth the short drive. Be sure and catch the short 6 minute video in the Visitors Center that explains how the Cross came to be, what happened and how the recent $500,000.00 renovation came to be!

Southern Illinois is also famous for its harvest of peaches and apples! Flamms Orchards in Cobden has a treat that can't be beat! A strawberry razzle!!! If you don't get a large you will be angry.....if you like blizzards, you will LOVE the razzle!

There are 1,000 year old Cypress Trees to see just down the road in Cypress. The Visitor Center has displays of local wildlife and the helpful staff can direct you to see these marvels of nature.....

There are so many things to see and do in our part of the Country. We promise you will be back, you will love it!

We want to make your vacation special. Don't hesitate to ask about in-house massage therapy, catering, event planning, or guided climbing and repeling. The only limit is your imagination!
